How good was that? Tommy Fleetwood's cup-clinching drive at Marco Simone

Europe had dominated from the opening session of foursomes of the 2023 Ryder Cup and by a sun-drenched Sunday afternoon, Luke Donald's team stood on the brink of reclaiming the trophy. Tommy Fleetwood stood on the 16th tee, a par 4 playing at just over 300 yards, and watched as his opponent, Rickie Fowler, dumped his drive in the water guarding the right side of the green.

The Englishman choked down on his driver and took dead aim before rifling what the Sky Sports commentators described as "the best drive of his life" into the setting sun. Fleetwood's missile arrowed towards the middle of the green and drew ever so slightly, clearing the front bunker and running to the left edge. Taking the break, it eventually came to a stop 23 feet above the hole.

The partizan crowds went wild, chanting "Tommy, Tommy" as the man dubbed "Fairway Jesus" walked towards his date with destiny. With Europe already on 14 points and his opponent on the green for three after taking a penalty drop, the Ryder Cup was now Fleetwood's to win. He cosied his putt down to three feet and Fowler conceded the putt for the match and Europe's victory.

Shot Quality reveals exactly how good Fleetwood's drive was. A Shot Quality score of 0 denotes the worst possible outcome, 100 represents the expected score of the average tour player, and 200 represents statistical perfection, such as a hole in one or holing out from long distance. As you can see, Tommy's drive in the cauldron of pressure that is Sunday singles at the Ryder Cup was seriously elite.
